@Man-E-Faces: You make some very valid points. Yes, I too have removed alot of bloatware on the laptop and have gotten a streamlined version of XP running. I found out that the order in which you install some of sony's drivers is important. I have gotten ubuntu running ontop of my xp machine via coLinux and Xming (for gui). It has turned out to be a nice combo i'd say.

Hating on the Sony SZ780 (built specifically for Vista Business) simply b/c it can't play with other O/S is not a reason for hating Sony. I personally like Sony, b/c the HW in other manuf are crap. You can tell a big diff in the laptop chassis that encasses the motherboard. Its a better built product. Now in terms of drivers sure, its always a pain to get the HW to play with other OSes. By the way, you know you can disable all those unwanted processes that you don't like. I've uninstalled all the bloated software and have it streamlined and my Vista laptop on my SZ780 boots up as fast as my Debian (Lenny) laptop. By the way, if you run Fedora, Suse, or Mandrake, you'll get a crazy amount of processes running. Try ps aux | grep -i wc -l and take your count there. Vista is undoubtedly overweight. No doubt there, but it is customizable so that it is streamlined. It just needs a diet at the hand of the Admin role and ensuring that some processes never run.

I have gotten it working, but there are still a few small bugs especially with my bluetooth, perhaps I am doing something wrong there. I will give that another shot.

You must be joking, right?
Everything works in SZ-780 in XP 32bit including brightness function et al, been using it for 5 months now and haven't had a single crash.
The computer is loaded now with all sorts of programs and it is rock solid.
You must be doing something wrong buddy as this is a very fine computer.

The downgrade CD doesn't work. I called Sony, they don't have a downgrade option for this laptop, even though they provide the drivers for XP now (The brightness function keys don't work on XP).
